“I’m Looking for Free Advice to Save My Marriage”

If you have ever conducted an Internet search for “free advice to save my marriage,” you’re a member of a club with thousands – even millions –of members.

The marriage journey has bumps, hills, potholes and diversions that threaten to tear even the best relationship to shreds.

Struggling with infidelity? There’s hope! Discouraged by financial problems? You’re not alone! Facing the prospect of divorce? You can stay together!

Hello, my name is Marshall and I am a guest blogger on Mort’s site. In the blog post below, I share some of the best “free advice to save my marriage” you’ll find anywhere.

How to Stay in Love: It Takes Commitment

Believe it or not, love is not how you feel. Some “free advice” forums will tell you that if you aren’t in love, divorce is your only option. This is simply not true.

If you remember that love is the result of selfless action, you’ll realize that staying in love depends on what you DO. This is commitment.

Let me explain. Think about your wedding vows. What did you say to your bride?

  • “For better or worse.”
  • “For richer or poorer.”
  • “In sickness and in health.”

Notice what was missing? At the altar, you didn’t say “When I FEEL better, when I FEEL healthy, when I FEEL richer,” did you?

That’s because love is not a feeling. People who think that being in love means experiencing happiness, pleasure and comfort all the time are mistaken. Emotions and feelings are as fleeting as the seconds in a day.

Love is a VERB. It’s is a behavior that generates an emotional response, not the response itself. And if love is something you DO, logic demands that you work at it.

So when people ask me for “free advice to save my marriage,” I tell them that they need to demonstrate their commitment in several ways:

  • Say “no” to separation – If your relationship is on the rocks, you might be tempted to spend time apart. I do NOT support the idea of separation, temporary or otherwise. Distance will not fix a marriage.

  • Say it with words – Every person needs to know that their spouse is in it for the long haul. The best way you can convey your commitment is to just say it. Tell your husband or wife, “I love you and I will do what I can to make this work.”

  • Say it with action – Vocally stating your commitment is important, but it isn’t enough. You need to SHOW your spouse how much you care. You can do this with a kind gesture, through physical contact, or by scheduling time together.

  • Say “yes” to change – Saving your relationship means you must be receptive to the idea of change. Which of your personal habits are causing strife? What are you missing? How are you failing to meet the needs of your spouse? Improve yourself and you can improve your marriage.

  • Say, “I do” again – Sometimes, couples need to remind each other of the promises they made at the altar. Renewing your vows, either publicly or privately, is a good way to refresh your commitment.

  • Say “okay” to help – You can read all the best “free advice” articles in the world, but they are meaningless until you understand how to implement those suggestions in your marriage. For that, you need Marriage Fitness.
