Adventures in Marriage Counseling: Workaholic Behavior

A person is a workaholic when their relationship with their work becomes more important than family, recreation and personal health.

How Workaholism Leads to Divorce

In 1999, the Charlotte Business Journal published an article revealing the results of a study, conducted by researchers at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, of the impact of workaholism on families.

Do you know what they found?

They discovered that marriages involving a workaholic are twice as likely to end in divorce.

Why?

The following are some examples of relationship issues brought about by a workaholic spouse:

  • A lower degree of interaction
  • A lack of interest in anything but work
  • A decrease in emotional connection
  • An absence of sexual intimacy

The effect of workaholism on family life is equally extraordinary. A workaholic will frequently miss out on significant events in the lives of their children. They will sacrifice a family function or a gathering of close friends to spend time at the office.

Workaholism can also bring significant stress-related health problems such as high blood pressure.

Break the Cycle with Marriage Counseling

Workaholic behavior causes severe damage in a relationship, but neither spouse is beyond hope.

There are steps that you can take to restore your marriage:

  1. Go on without your spouse – Moving on without your spouse might seem harsh, but you aren’t helping by constantly waiting on them either. Your partner begins to expect you to hold dinner or keep the kids awake until you get home. Instead, continue on with your day as usual. This will make your spouse think about everything they are missing.
  2. Find a mutual hobby – You should find something you enjoy as a couple and make a point to do it regularly. Sign up for ballroom dancing lessons. Go on a date every Friday night. Get involved with a nonprofit organization. Whatever activity you choose, make it consistent.
  3. Divide domestic duties – Sit down with your spouse and write down a chore plan. Give them a share of the responsibility at home, whether it’s taking the kids to music lessons or doing the evening dishes. Don’t give in to the temptation to do their assignments for them.

  4. Get help – The best thing you can do if you aren’t sure how to address this problem is to ask for help.

Even though you might be hesitant to try marriage counseling, workaholic behavior MUST eventually be addressed if you want to save a marriage.

However, unless you know how to properly approach your spouse and implement constructive changes on your own, you will almost certainly fail.
